Who we are

Greyhound Pets of America Senior Sanctuary of Florida is a group of volunteers who are dedicated to placing senior greyhounds over the age of seven either in permanent foster homes or hopefully with new adoptive families. We are also dedicated to educating the public of the importance and true meaning of lifelong commitment when adopting.

Senior greyhounds are friendly, intelligent, affectionate dogs that thrive on attention. When their racing careers are over, they make marvelous companions. Unfortunately, there are many senior greyhounds retired from breeding, abandoned in shelters, or thoughtlessly returned by their adopters to the adoption groups they originated from. It is unfair and extremely sad that, at an elderly age when they should be relaxing and enjoying the golden years of their lives, they are being bounced around and left to be forgotten. This is why the Senior Sanctuary was formed.

People need to realize how upsetting and confusing it can be to be uprooted in the fragile and sensitive senior years of a greyhound's life. Senior greyhounds are very easygoing, and enjoy curling up on a soft bed near you.  They have been called "the best kept secret" in the greyhound adoption community. They fit right into the family as if they've been there for years. It is hard to believe how easily they acclimate to new surroundings and thrive.

Greyhound Pets of America Senior Sanctuary of Florida is looking for people willing to open their homes and hearts to a senior greyhound over the age of seven.

We have many different adoption/foster opportunities tailored to the specific needs of each and every senior greyhound we have available and also for their potential new family. All food, supplies, medical needs, heartworm prevention, flea/tick prevention, and mentoring are provided.

Please join us at one of our Meet & Greets or other events.

  • New Video Promoting Greyhound Adoption

Greyhound Friends of Augusta (Georgia) posted a link from their site to a song called "The Race" by Matt Dahan.  Matt wrote the song for his family's two adopted greyhounds.  After listening to the song, group volunteer, Alan Jackson purchased it, wrote out the lyrics, timed the song and scoured the internet looking for appropriate photos to make a slideshow video.  After viewing the
video, Matt gave Alan permission to use it to promote greyhound adoption.  You may view it on YouTube.

The Fragile Circle

We who choose to surround ourselves with lives
even more temporary than our own
live within a fragile circle,

easily and often breached.

Unable to accept it's awful gaps
We still would live no other way.

We cherish memory as the only certain immortality,
never fully understanding the necessary plan.
